The Gangsters Anonymous fellowship speaks about how freedom comes from a spiritual transformation, not just self-control. In prison, many people struggle with lust, power, anger, loneliness, fear, and the desire to dominate others. The Steps help us identify these defects of character, surrender them to a Higher Power, and practice principles such as honesty, humility, respect, and service.

Through inventory, confession, amends, prayer, meditation, and helping others, we learn that other human beings are not objects to be used for our gratification. We begin to see them as people deserving dignity and respect.

Freedom is not merely the absence of rape; freedom is the removal of the obsession to exploit, control, or violate another person. The spiritual awakening described in Step Twelve changes our motives. Instead of asking, 'What can I take from others?' we learn to ask, 'How can I be of service to others?'

The result is a new way of living based on respect, accountability, and responsibility rather than impulse, selfishness, and harm."

"We are no longer driven by destructive impulses; we are guided by spiritual principles."

"Recovery means complete abstinence from a gangsters behavior—including sexual violence, intimidation, coercion, and exploitation. A recovering gangster learns that real strength is self-mastery, respect for others, and living by spiritual principles rather than impulses."
