As women with a gangster’s mentality, many of us learned early that direct power was not always available to us. So, we developed indirect power. We used beauty, emotion, silence, crisis, and sympathy as tools. We learned how to influence rooms without appearing aggressive. We mastered the art of suggestion, guilt, and emotional leverage. We did not call it manipulation. We called it survival. But survival slowly became control.

By living this way, we damage relationships, trust, and self-respect. Love became a transaction. Loyalty became ownership. Fear became our foundation. We withheld affection to gain compliance. We tested loyalty by creating conflict. We used secrets as leverage. We aligned ourselves with powerful men while quietly controlling from behind the scenes. In some cases, we involve our children in adult conflicts. In other cases, we justified dishonesty as protection. We believed power meant safety.

We did not see ourselves as gangsters. But our thinking was rooted in power, control, and survival at all costs. In Gangsters Anonymous, we learn: Power is not control. Love is not leverage. Honesty is strength. Accountability is freedom. True freedom begins when we admit: “I manipulate because I am afraid.
